Socialism... in space!
Welcome to the homepage for Socialism... in space!
This is a very janky and very silly prototype that demonstrates two things for students in HIS 482 History and Video Games:
- the definition of a "historical video game" for this class is open to what students make of it
- you can do a lot of things with Gamemaker without a background in coding
---
This game also exhibits some important components that need to be present in student-produced games:
- the game is playable
- the game utilizes historical primary sources, adhering to Fair Use
- the game lives on its own page here on itch: it is published and freely available
There is more: how you choose sources, how you use them, how we understand the context behind that. We will cover all of that in class work and assignments.
Note that this game... doesn't really work! Your group will be able to accomplish an awful lot more than your professor did. But one of our goals here is to explore and have fun. Feel free to try things.

Primary Sources used
The Karl Marx portrait: royalty-free clip art based on the famous John Mayall photographic portrait of 1875. This portrait is in the public domain. More information can be found here.
The Ronald Reagan portrait is taken from the Encyclopedia Britannica entry on Reagan, courtesy of the Reagan Library.
The Reagan soundbite is from a speech given to the National Association of Evangelicals Association in Florida on 8 March 1983.
The "socialism!" soundbite is taken from "No Time to Think" on Bob Dylan's album Street Legal, released by Columbia Records in 1978.
The music for the game is an extract from The Hunt for Red October, a 1990 film directed by John McTiernan and released by Paramount Pictures. You can find more information here.

This game is a very basic mod of the Gamemaker tutorial "Space Rocks". It's a great place to start with Gamemaker.
